Trying to install rails

While trying to install rails using $ gem install rails I get the error "Could not find a valid gem 'rails' (>= 0), here is why:
Unable to download data from - timed out ("

I've tried adding the rubygems site to my source but it's already there. I then tried to update using $ gem update --system which gave me the error "ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::RemoteFetcher::UnknownHostError)
    timed out ("

I've tried all of the solutions that came up on Google but nothing is working. I'm also a total noob so there is a very real chance I screwed something up. Look for any guidance! Thanks!

    hi Chris B,

Looks like is not resolvable/reachable from your host. Can you please try to download spec file using wget or curl and see what error comes up?
