The version number doesn't currently increase until you set the
platform to the default (ie. RUBY)

ferventcodertag:help.rubygems.org,2010-01-19:Comment/23137102010-07-20T20:20:35Z2010-07-20T20:20:35ZShould the version number go up when a non standard version is submitted?

Do you have an example URL showing this?

Eric Hodeltag:help.rubygems.org,2010-01-19:Comment/23137102010-07-20T20:39:56Z2010-07-20T20:40:00ZShould the version number go up when a non standard version is submitted?

I had one here - I can recreate it for you.

<a href=

Give me a moment.

ferventcodertag:help.rubygems.org,2010-01-19:Comment/23137102010-07-20T20:45:52Z2010-07-20T20:48:27ZShould the version number go up when a non standard version is submitted?

Okay - notice the most recent version is 0.5.0.247 but when you
come to the page it displays 0.5.0.242 instead of 0.5.0.247.

I also found that if you never have one w/a standard version,
gems actually errors when you try to run:

gem install gemname

But that is another issue.

ferventcodertag:help.rubygems.org,2010-01-19:Comment/23137102010-07-23T17:08:41Z2010-07-23T17:08:41ZShould the version number go up when a non standard version is submitted?

When you run
gem install gemname

It pulls down the non-std version (the latest) for you.
However the site is inconsistent in showing what was actually
downloaded.

ferventcodertag:help.rubygems.org,2010-01-19:Comment/23137102010-07-25T16:29:36Z2010-07-25T16:29:36ZShould the version number go up when a non standard version is submitted?

Right, this is because we favor the Ruby platform over other
platforms for rubygems#show. Not sure what the best way forward
here is. Are those ruby platform gems under roundhouse actually
ruby?

Nick Quarantotag:help.rubygems.org,2010-01-19:Comment/23137102010-07-25T20:43:06Z2010-07-25T20:43:06ZShould the version number go up when a non standard version is submitted?

They are not ruby. There is some ruby in shelling out to the
executable, but the actual app is not ruby. Currently that is the
only way I see to get the site consistent in displaying the version
number.

This may be a bit of a non-issue as we move off to gemsfor.net
to keep them in the ruby platform.

I don't know the best way forward here either. Do you have
suggestions?

ferventcodertag:help.rubygems.org,2010-01-19:Comment/23137102010-07-26T21:15:30Z2010-07-26T21:15:30ZShould the version number go up when a non standard version is submitted?

rubygems.org should try to minimize user confusion but I don't
know if the correct way to do that is to show the latest version
for any platform or to show the latest version of the ruby
platform.

Eric Hodeltag:help.rubygems.org,2010-01-19:Comment/23137102010-07-30T02:29:42Z2010-07-30T02:29:42ZShould the version number go up when a non standard version is submitted?

So we've been discussion the idea of the platform. The thing we
keep coming back to is the biggest use of platform is RUBY, not
based on OS. But most of the other platform targets talked about
are based on OS.

What I think we would like to see is something like ".NET",
because it's a language like Ruby. That means the mswin32 should
probably be something more like "C++" if that is who it was
originally created for.

Thoughts?

ferventcodertag:help.rubygems.org,2010-01-19:Comment/23137102010-08-14T15:29:54Z2010-08-14T15:29:54ZShould the version number go up when a non standard version is submitted?

I'm going to resolve this one for now, we can discuss this more on the nu-net list if we need to :)

Nick Quaranto
