  • Is there a gem to to manage a machines configuration i.e. what is installed, machine details, versions of installed items.
  • This would allow
  • the ever problematic linux/windows/mac/... bash/korn/ $PATH %path% where is it, what do I update, to be removed as the gem would let my linker know where and what they are.
  • Documentation invariably contains the 3 main OS variants, a costly and inefficient overhead which is difficult to maintain
  • Raise the level of abstraction to a similar level that sudo manages to achieve
  • Allow other gems to read and write to this locally hosted repository of configuration information amplifying the Rails philosophy of convention over configuration.

This is a help site for the rubygems software so your questions are off-topic.

I will try to answer your questions as best I can.

    a) I think there are several, chef and puppet come to mind

    b) I think you are looking for rbconfig.rb

c, d, e) I think you should talk to the chef or puppet people
