gems.rubyforge.org has been down for 15 minutes here.
https://twitter.com/search?q=rubyforge&src=typd agrees, rubyforge has been down for 30 minutes now.

    The symptom here was

    gem install json

fails after a long pause with

ERROR: http://gems.rubyforge.org/ does not appear to be a repository
ERROR: could not find gem json locally or in a repository

    Hello,

gems.rubyforge.org has been deprecated and replaced, long ago, with
    https://rubygems.org

Please update your sources using "gem source" command.

This is on Ubuntu 10.04 (which hit EOL a couple months ago),
with no .gemrc. The bad path comes from
    /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rubygems/defaults.rb
    which says
      def self.default_sources
        %w[http://gems.rubyforge.org/]

On Ubuntu 12.04, that file has the new value,
      def self.default_sources
        %w[http://rubygems.org/]

So that's where it came from, and why you'll be hearing a lot of complaints from people who have not yet updated their now-unsupported ubuntu 10.04 systems.

You guys should just put in a redirect, if possible.

Ubuntu 10.04 is an LTS release and the server edition is supported and alive for two more years. Completely deactivating gems.rubyforge.org is not a great move in that regard.

    Hello,

Seems my other response got missed, but this was not intentional and there
is a problem with RubyForge (not RubyGems)

Please use RubyForge own reporting mechanism to notify about this issue:

    http://rubyforge.org/projects/support

But you cannot use the rubyforge reporting mechanism because rubyforge.org is DOWN!

    Hello Norm,

Please change your gem source to https://rubygems.org

    Thanks for the quick response.

What I have is a svn repository for a ruby application (not a gem) on
rubyforge. Is that now available somewhere on rubygems.org?

Only if the author pushed it to RubyGems.org or published it on rubyforge.org before the import (some years ago).

Otherwise you will need to push it to RubyGems.org.

I guess I am back to the original problem (which seems not to be a
rubygems.org problem). Rubyforge.org is not available and I (the author
or an app) can no longer access the svn repository. Is there any way
you could forward this exchange to Tom Copeland. I think he might know
    what is up.

I agree. Thank you whoever corrected whatever the problem was. Please
    close out the problem report.
