gem server -d gembase failed with: gem_base does not appear to be a gem repository

Hello,
gem generate_index -d gem_base/ seemed to work, so I wonder where I am missing something.
Any suggestions are dearly appreciated.

    Does this work if you don't specify -d ? I've added Eric to this thread in hopes he might have an idea of what's going wrong here. :)

    when i run
    $ gem server gem_base the server start and serves my locally installed gems instead those
    in gem_base/gems
