I seem unable to install any gems using rubygems v1.3.6 or
v1.3.7
I unpacked InstantRails 2.0 and it didn't have rubygems or mongrel
working right. I have been sweating over this for a week now. I
have rubygems installed although I don't know what is wrong. I
apparently have no gems installed as reported by "gem list". Please
advise.

Frank C. Pelletiertag:help.rubygems.org,2010-01-19:Comment/21946192010-07-07T20:52:48Z2010-07-07T20:52:49ZMongrel installation issues

Please note that if I understand the error correctly such that
rubygems.rb:528 is line 528, then the error is in the following
routine (specifically the last line of the routine):

##
# Zlib::GzipReader wrapper that unzips +data+.
def self.gunzip(data)
require 'stringio'
require 'zlib'
data = StringIO.new data
Zlib::GzipReader.new(data).read
end

Note that I have made sure that the issue is not due to
permission. There are no file permission issues and I am the
machine admin. I gather that my issue is directly germane to
unpacking the gem. Why? I have read of speculation that this error
comes about when RAM is choked. I will try later today to complete
this task on a laptop with 8GB of unencumbered RAM...let you
know.

Frank C. Pelletiertag:help.rubygems.org,2010-01-19:Comment/21946192010-07-07T20:58:15Z2010-07-07T20:58:15ZMongrel installation issues

You seem to be experiencing a Ruby bug, not a RubyGems bug. Zlib
is part of ruby, not RubyGems.

Eric Hodeltag:help.rubygems.org,2010-01-19:Comment/21946192010-07-17T20:39:56Z2010-07-17T20:39:56ZMongrel installation issues

I would try using the RubyInstaller project instead of
InstantRails. Going to consider this resolved, let us know if the
problems continue.

Nick Quaranto
